Expert in Urban, Prison and Gang Culture for:

Criminal Law Attorneys:

While I am frequently called upon for cases involving gang enhancements and am expected to testify to my opinion, not every case is about trying to show that an individual is not in a gang or that the alleged crime was not gang related, hence the reason I am not simply a “gang expert”. Often times the value of my services is in helping the attorney understand the bigger picture, translating the culture/language/symbolism, highlighting mitigating factors, aiding in cross-examination preparation or helping to craft a feasible and honest defense strategy. In cases in which traditional gangs may be a peripheral influence at best but trends in urban culture or residuals from incarceration are relevant I may still be of assistance.

Immigration Law Attorneys/Advocates:

From DACA applications to asylum cases and U-Visa petitions, being labeled a gang member can be a barrier to relief in immigration proceedings. I have handled all of the above, nationwide, through both reports and telephonic testimony.

Community Based Gang/Violence Prevention Consultation:

The primary purpose of this website is the legal services of JMason Consulting. To learn more about my services outside of this context I encourage you to visit (HOMIE=Helping Others Move In Excellence).

Prison Sentencing & Classification Consulting:

As one who has navigated California state prison and has regular contact with system-involved people nationwide I am well qualified to help individuals and families best prepare for incarceration. I have been a teacher and facilitator for diverse audiences over the past several years and am comfortable handling difficult conversations in a sensitive, truthful and confidential manner.

Speaker / Workshop Facilitator:

From the specific aspect of being an expert witness/consultant on urban, prison & gang culture in the legal system to practical trainings and presentations from a community-based perspective, I welcome the opportunity to add value to your conference or organization.

Thank you.
