While I am frequently called upon for cases involving gang enhancements and am expected to testify to my opinion, not every case is about trying to show that an individual is not in a gang or that the alleged crime was not gang related, hence the reason I am not simply a “gang expert”. Often times the value of my services is in helping the attorney understand the bigger picture, translating the culture/language/symbolism, highlighting mitigating factors, aiding in cross-examination preparation or helping to craft a feasible and honest defense strategy. In cases in which traditional gangs may be a peripheral influence at best but trends in urban culture or residuals from incarceration are relevant I may still be of assistance.
From DACA applications to asylum cases and U-Visa petitions, being labeled a gang member can be a barrier to relief in immigration proceedings. I have handled all of the above, nationwide, through both reports and telephonic testimony.
The primary purpose of this website is the legal services of JMason Consulting. To learn more about my services outside of this context I encourage you to visit HOMIEforLife.org (HOMIE=Helping Others Move In Excellence).
As one who has navigated California state prison and has regular contact with system-involved people nationwide I am well qualified to help individuals and families best prepare for incarceration. I have been a teacher and facilitator for diverse audiences over the past several years and am comfortable handling difficult conversations in a sensitive, truthful and confidential manner.
From the specific aspect of being an expert witness/consultant on urban, prison & gang culture in the legal system to practical trainings and presentations from a community-based perspective, I welcome the opportunity to add value to your conference or organization.
